It’s September now and fall is swiftly descending upon us, which means it’s also back-to-school time. Whether rain, shine, or even overcast, here are a few ideas for fun activities to indulge in with your kids this autumn!
1. Apple Picking
Right before the onset of autumn is the perfect time of the year to grab a basket and get apple picking. Bring your kids to the one-of-a-kind farming experience at one of our top three choice destinations: Apple Wood Orchards, near Woodbury, Greig Farm in Red Hook or Barton Orchards near Poughkeepsie. The half bushel ranges from $20 to $24. Enjoy some cold apple cider and a fresh donut at one of these picturesque getaways.
2. Get Creative
Every year, the Morningside Lights parade takes place in the park of the same name. A week before the event, the Miller Theater will host an impressive number of workshops for creative people of all ages. Get everything you need to create your own illuminated puppet at one of these events and you and your family can take part in the parade as well!
3. Have Fun
Organize a play date at the Fall Kids Fest in Madison Square Park. Children of all ages will be able to bond over book readings, live concerts and many other seasonal activities! You don’t want to miss out on this exciting event that brings kids together in a spirit of learning and creativity.
4. Go Adventure
Sometimes it is better to just explore. So wander through Central Park when its at the peak of Autumn beauty and the leaves are a splendid array of warm reds and yellows. You can even collect them and create your own herbarium at the end of the day!
5. Children’s Shows
For an evening of culture and music, take your older kids to a Broadway Show! Many of them are kid friendly, such as Spider-Man, Cinderella or the famous Annie. Otherwise, for your little ones, the New Victory Theater offers the best professional children’s shows in Manhattan, featuring a lineup of professional children’s entertainers and groups.
6. Fall Treats
In November, head to the New York Chocolate Show to develop your cocoa palate. Tons of exhibitors gather every year to give out samples of delectable confections. White, dark, milk, if it’s chocolate, you are bound to find it here!
7. Let your Imagination Wander
Does your child love reading or hearing stories? The Brooklyn Book Festival, held in Brooklyn Borough Hall and Columbus Park in September since 2005, is the place for all varieties of the literary enthusiast! With no age limits, this festival appeals to all demographics! The annual Brooklyn Children’s Book Fair also takes place in November.
8. Discover Art in Brooklyn
Take your young art aficionado to the Dumbo Arts Festival (a local favourite of ours) in September. It’s an exciting annual carnival dedicated to the Brooklyn art scene. Carousels, art activities, and workshops will be especially organized for the little ones, making it an occasion that will excite the entire family.
9. Celebrate Halloween
During the Halloween season, don’t miss the area’s biggest event: The Great Jack O’Lantern. Held in upstate New York, it features over 4,000 hand-carved, illuminated pumpkins set against the mysterious backdrop of an 18th-century manor and riverside landscape. Buying tickets in advance is highly recommended as this event is very popular.
10. Ride a Horse
The cool autumn weather makes it the perfect season to start horseback riding. Bring your kids in for a lesson or a ride through the park with experienced instructors at the Bronx Equestrian Center. Looking for a closer place? The Kensington Stables offers pony rides for kids from 18 months-old and up.
